Irma H. Curry, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2007, at the age of 101 ½ surrounded by her family. She had spent her whole life living in Eau Claire and was able to live independently until the age of 97, when health problems caused her to make the move to Dove Healthcare.\r\nIrma was born in Eau Claire on February 28, 1906, the daughter of Earl and Olga (Borgen) Kalanquin. She married Arthur J. Curry in Eau Claire on June 19, 1928. They spent many happy moments enjoying their home on the Chippewa River.\r\nIrma graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in January 1924. She then attended the Eau Claire Teachers College where she earned a bachelor's degree in education as a teaching and reading specialist in 1926. Irma taught one semester and five summer sessions at the university, and then taught for 45 years in the Fall Creek and Eau Claire school districts, 39 of which were at Robbins School. She was instrumental in getting the school board to buy the land the present Robbins School sits on. \r\nIrma held a high regard for learning. She was an outstanding teacher, who year's later former students came up to her to sing her praise. As one former student said, "Mrs. Curry was one well dressed lady who taught us what we needed to learn".After her retirement from teaching in 1971, Irma managed an apartment building for another 22 years well into her 90's.\r\nShe was an active member of the Eau Claire Retired Teacher's Association, and First Lutheran Church. She belonged to many church circle's, and always had time for her card clubs and the numerous luncheon's with her large circle of friends. Irma enjoyed traveling and taking the occasional bus ride to Turtle Lake, where once in awhile she came back a winner. She will always be remembered for her great fudge and fruitcake's she gave out at Christmas time.\r\nIrma is survived by her son, Hugh and his wife Bunny of Eau Claire; two granddaughters, Jennifer Curry and her special friend Scott of LaCrosse, and Tina (Dod) Bertsch of Chippewa Falls and their children Zac, Kylie, Ryeann, Ryan and Dodger; nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Nancy Leazott of Eau Claire; her long time friend Hazel Nelson of Eau Claire; many other friends; and her special dog, Louie.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her husband, Art in 1960; an infant son, Joe; her parents Olga and Earl; brother, Leslie Kalanquin; two sisters, Esther Thompson and Florence Fjelstad; and special niece, Betty Catroneo.\r\nFuneral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, in the chapel at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Amy Odgren officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire.
