J. Allen "Al" Johnson, 91, of Eau Claire, died Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Syverson Lutheran Home in Eau Claire. He was born on December 28, 1914, in the Town of Drammen to John M. and Amanda (Olson) Johnson. \r\nAl married Corraine M. Grorud in Eau Claire on June 1, 1945. Corraine passed on June 15, 2004, after 59 years of marriage. \r\nIn 1933 he graduated from Eau Claire High School, attended UW-Madison and UW-Eau Claire, and began his teaching career in January 1943 in Elk Mound. He continued his social studies career in September 1943 at Eau Claire High School on Main Street.\r\nWhen Eau Claire North was built, Al became Dean of Boys at Eau Claire Memorial for 10 years. Some of his duties dealt with discipline, truancy, and "too long" hair. He completed his Masters in Guidance at UW-Stout in 1963 and was Guidance Counselor at Memorial until his retirement in 1979.\r\nHe was also class adviser for many years. In 2003 he celebrated with his Class of 1953 at their 50th class reunion.\r\nMany times when Al and Corraine were out to lunch at Randy's Restaurant, a former student would stop and say, "Hello, Mr. Johnson, I'm _______, and I was in your class of 19___. You were my favorite! You were strict, but you always cared about kids!"\r\nHe inspired and touched the lives of many students, and we are blessed to have been a part of his life. \r\nAl's hobbies included watching the Memorial Old Abes, fishing on the Red Cedar, and reading. \r\nHe was a member of First Lutheran Church.\r\nAl is survived by his daughter, Nancy Bugni and son-in-law Glenn of Antigo; granddaughter, Amanda-Helen Bugni of Minneapolis; two sisters, Virginia Dittner of Eau Claire and Evelyn Stillman of Zephyr Hills, FL; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Kalseth and Ruby Mueller both of Chicago; two brothers-in-law, Calvin Grorud of Janesville and Vilas Grorud of Altoona; and many beloved nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his wife, Corraine in 2004; three brothers, Harold, Norman, and an infant baby Johnson; and two sisters, Mildred Jenson and Ruth Walker.\r\nFuneral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 15, 2006, at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Duane C. Pederson officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.\r\nFamily requests memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church Foundation.\r\n
