Obituary

JACK G. BULLIS, 80, of Altoona, died Friday, March 17, 2000 at his home. He was born and raised in Eau Claire, Town of Washington on April 8, 1919 to Verne and Thelma (Goff) Bullis. Jack attended Robbins School, Eau Claire Senior High School, and Eau Claire State Normal School. \r\nJack had many interests and worked at several jobs. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941. In November 1942 he graduated from Officer Candidate School, U.S. Army Signal Corps, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. After receiving his commission, he served in the European Theatre of Operations, the Philippines, and the Army of Occupation in Japan after the surrender of the Japanese. Before leaving for Europe he married Ruth Thorpe of Stanley, WI on November 21, 1942 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. \r\nAfter World War II, he was called from the Reserves to active duty and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict, and earned the Bronze Metal for Meritorious Service. After returning from service, he operated a small business in Glenwood City, WI before joining the Federal REA telephone program where he spent 28 years as an Engineer in Washington D.C., Illinois, and Wisconsin. After retiring he was Project Engineer for the Monroe County Telephone Co. at Sparta for three years. He enjoyed working with the small independent telephone companies and received awards and recognition from the State Telephone Assoc., for creating training programs for the telephone industry.\r\nJack is survived by his wife, Ruth of 57 years; two sons, Roger (Pat) of Plover, WI, and John (Lettie) of Boulder City, NV; two grandsons, Terry of Plover and Paul (Therese) of Slinger, WI; two step-grandchildren, Aaron Ackeret and Bethany Ackeret of Stevens Point and Plover; two great-granddaughters, Bailey Catherine and Alexa Marie; a sister, Dorothy Bullis Carpenter (Arnold) of Eau Claire; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. \r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents and a newborn son, Terry Alan.\r\nJack was active in his church serving on many boards and committees, including president of Grace Lutheran Foundation, was a member of 3 S men's group, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the Chippewa Valley Museum. He served on the Eau Claire Parks&Waterways Commission and the State Telephone Assn. Education Advisory Committee for several years, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Toastmaster's Club. He served as president of the Eau Claire Rotary Club, Golden K Kiwanis Club, and the local chapter of Retired Federal Employees. When his family lived in Stevens Point, WI was Jack was president of Trinity Lutheran Church and he was Commanding Officer of the 410th Signal Corps Army Reserve Unit. \r\nHe loved music and played in the Eau Claire Municipal Band, College Band and Army Band while in the service. He has been active in the rehabilitation of Luther Park Bible Camp and most recently had written a biography of his grandfather, family and their farm, which is now Oakwood Mall. \r\nFuneral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Rolf A. Nestingen officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and an hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.\r\nMemorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran's Radio and TV Ministry, Luther Park Bible Camp or Grace Lutheran Foundation.
