Obituary

James H. Johnson, 89, of Eau Claire died Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at his home.\r\nHe was born in Chimney Rock, WI, on February 2, 1919, the son of Julian and Hattie (Gilbertson) Johnson.\r\nJim married Ethel V. Thompson on May 9, 1942, in Strum. The following day the newlyweds departed for Moore Field in McAllen, TX, where James served in the U.S. Army Air Force until the time of his honorable discharge on November 27, 1945.\r\nHe was employed by Drummond Packing and Uniroyal for 31 years, retiring in 1981.\r\nJim was admired for his hard work, and was a wizard with all things mechanical. He was always willing to help someone work on anything in need of repair. Jim and Ethel enjoyed camping, progressing from a tent to deluxe recreational vehicle as the years passed. He also enjoyed fishing, spending many summer evenings with his son casting flies into Half Moon Lake. Jim took pride in the care and upkeep of his properties. Later in life, Jim enjoyed staying near home and following the Packers and Brewers.\r\nJim is survived by his son, James (Rita) of Eau Claire; grandson, Christian (Stephanie Shadick) of Minneapolis; granddaughter, Kjessia Johnson Karol (Ben); a great grandson, Emmett Karol, also of Minneapolis; and by his brother, Arnold of Broomfield, CO.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ethel Vivian in November 2005; his parents; and two sisters, Doris Schiefelbein and Orina Larson.\r\nFuneral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Pastor Gary F. Sahs officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. \r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 2427 North Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona, WI 54720.
