Obituary

James "Jim" L. Mercer, 44, of Eau Claire died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Luther Hospital after a short and courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 15, 1962, in Hampton, Virginia, the son of George and Sandy (Cleveland) Mercer. Jim grew up in Austin, Texas. He spent four years in U.S. Navy submarine service after high school.\r\nJim married Amy Jo Cummings on August 23, 2003, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. \r\nHe worked in the maintenance department at Global Finishing Solutions in Osseo. \r\nHe had a passion for electronics, mechanics and radio communications. He became a licensed ham radio operator while in the Navy and remained active in the local group. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.\r\n He was a former member of the Shell Lake-Spooner Masonic Lodge #221 F&AM, the Mehara Shrine Club of Eau Claire, and Zor Shrine of Madison. \r\nJim is survived by his wife, Amy; son, Tyler; parents, George and Sandy Mercer of George West, Texas; brother, Todd Mercer of Phoenix, AZ; maternal grandfather, Carl (Virginia) Hansen of Kerrville, Texas; mother-in-law, Sandy (Tim) Kennedy of Merrillan, WI; father-in-law, Gary (Donna) Cummings of Alma Center; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. \r\nJim was preceded in death by a brother, Sean Wesley Mercer; paternal grandparents, James and Harriette Mercer; maternal grandmother, Marguerita Cleveland; a very special great-grandmother, Lydia Isgrigg; and an uncle, Franklyn Mercer.\r\nMemorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2006, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Thomas W. Bryan officiating. A portion of the remains will be buried in Forest Oaks Cemetery in Austin, Texas. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
