James W. Quick, 93, of Eau Claire, died on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Syverson Lutheran Home, Eau Claire. James was born in Eau Claire on February 10, 1924, a son to Charles and Myrtle (Green) Quick. He married Delores Anderson on September 14, 1947, at First Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. James served his country aboard the USS Vestal (AR-4) in the South Pacific. He signed up to serve at the age of 17 and served aboard one of the oldest (originally a WWI vessel) and most highly decorated ships in the US fleet. His service took him too many of the key locations of the South Pacific campaign. From Tongatapu, Nouméa (the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands), Funafuti, the Marshall Islands, Saipan and Okinawa to name a few. His resolve and sense of what was right was forged at a young age amidst the tragedy of war. These fundamental characteristics followed him throughout his life and touched everyone he knew. James enjoyed golfing, hunting, and watching the Vikings. He was also a charter member of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. He is survived by his sons, James J (Jill), and David; daughter, Barbara; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jessa (Brett) Torvik, great-grandchildren, Kaia, Anderson, and Desmond; brother-in-law, Norman Anderson; many nieces and nephews. James is preceded in death by his wife, Delores (January 26, 2009); parents; brothers, Fred, Harry, Raymond, Orville, and Dwyane; and sister, Geraldine. The family would like to thank staff at the Syverson Lutheran Home and the Mayo Hospice team for their special care. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018, at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1120 Cedar Street, Eau Claire, with Pastor Phil Ruge-Jones officiating. No visitation will precede the funeral service at the church. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #53. Burial will be at a later date in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Eau Claire County Humane Association, 3900 Old Town Hall Rd, Eau Claire, WI 54701; or the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
