Jean Fisher Bergman, 90, of Eau Claire passed away Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Syverson Lutheran Home. Jean Fisher was born into one of Madison, Wisconsin's oldest families in 1914. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and eventually earned a Master's Degree in Comparative Literature. \r\nUpon completing her education, Jean went to work in a Madison bank, but in 1940, she married Donald Bergman, then of Chippewa Falls. The young couple first lived in Duluth, Minnesota, where the Bergman Corporation (today's Bergman Companies) had an office, but they soon moved to Eau Claire, where they lived for over forty years.\r\nThey were both active members of First Congregational Church and the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club. In addition, Jean volunteered widely in Eau Claire social and welfare organizations, including work in Eau Claire hospitals. She was also active in the PEO organization, the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, and the American Association of University Women, and she occasionally contributed articles about great women in Wisconsin history to publications of the Wisconsin State Historical Society. After Donald's retirement, they split their years between Florida and Michigan. Shortly after Donald's death in 1991, Jean returned to Eau Claire, where she made her home at Mount Washington Residence. She lived her final two years at Syverson Lutheran Home.\r\nJean is survived by her three sons and beloved daughter-in-law, William and Kathy Bergman of Eau Claire, Edward Bergman of New York City, and Richard Bergman of Atlanta, Georgia; and her closest companion and friend, Margie (Billy) Krause of Eau Claire.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 1991; her parents; and a sister who died in childhood.\r\nMemorial services will be at 10 a .m. Thursday, June 30, 2005, at First Congregational United Church of Christ Chapel with Rev. Mark X. Pirazzini officiating. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church Chapel.
