Joan Juanita McElwaine of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, passed away on June 6, 2023.
She was born to Gladys and Wallace Patraz on December 1, 1932. After graduating from Memorial High School, Joan married Ronald Champion and lived in Maine until the sudden loss of Ronald during an Air Force accident. Joan enjoyed traveling and visiting Air Force friends in Biloxi, Mississippi. After Ronalds death she returned to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and married Virgil McElwaine, a member of the Federal Aviation Association. She enjoyed her career as a Dental Assistant and a Teaching aid at the Little Red Elementary School. Joan was active in the Hope Lutheran Church and served at The Community Table. (Joan made a delicious "Pilgrim Soup.") She loved feeding the birds and wildlife in her yard, walking in her neighborhood and at the Mall every morning, playing Bridge, and visiting Casinos. Joan was a big fan of Engelbert Humperdinck, Gene Autry, and Anderson Cooper. Joan lived in the Heatherwood Community for the past 5 years, where she lived in comfort and care and shared friendships and activities that enlivened her quality of life.
Joan is survived by her son, Duane Ronald Champion, and his wife, Jen, and their children; her brother, Victor Patraz and wife, Patricia and children; sister, Sally Staehling and husband, Dave and children; sister, Sandy Mathison and children.
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents at Heatherwood Retirement Home, the Mayo Clinic Care Team, Nurses Karen Horgen and Kathi Neevel, Minister Mary Erickson from Hope Lutheran Church, and friend Cleo. Memorials are preferred to The Community Table in Eau Claire.
A graveside service for Joan will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Rest Haven Cemetery in Washington Township, WI, with Pastor Mary Erickson officiating.
