Obituary

John A. Bowman, 92, of Eau Claire, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024 at Heritage Court Memory Care Community - Eau Claire. He was born on December 21, 1931, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, the son of George and Elizabeth Schleuter Bowman. He was a 1950 graduate of Eau Claire Senior High School and later received his bachelor of science in secondary education from UWEC in June, 1957. Still later, in 1960, he was to receive the master of science degree from Stout State College. John served in the Korean Conflict as a member of the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 and is a long-time member of American Legion Post 53. On August 1, 1953, John and Patricia Lu Jane Pond were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church here in Eau Claire. Together he and Pat assisted this parish for many years in their profound and sincere dedicated service. The Bowman family has maintained life-long membership at Immanuel. John entered the teaching profession at Menomonie, Wisconsin, in 1957. After two years there he returned to Eau Claire to teach at Memorial High School the next three years. In 1962, he transferred to the new North High School in Eau Claire and served the school as a teacher, dean of boys, athletic director and assistant principal for 25 years and in 1987 became North's third principal. After seven more years as chief administrator at North, he retired in June, 1994. Most people found him a man of solid opinion and conviction on most subjects concerning the welfare and education of high school youth. He projected a positive image in school matters, gaining high respect from students, parents, and staff alike. John felt strongly the need to be "visible" not only during the school day, but by his attendance and involvement in North's extra-curricular activities at other times. He was elected a charter member of the Husky Hall of Fame in October of 1998 and inducted into the Eau Claire Baseball Hall of Fame in January, 2011. John was active in community matters. He was a member of the board of directors serving as president of the Chippewa Valley Museum and Foundation for several years. Also, he held membership on the Triniteam Board of Directors, was a member of the Luther Hospital Community Relations Committee, and served as a mediator for Small Claims Court. John was actively interested in local library issues and served as a member of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Library Facilities Planning Committee. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Eau Claire for some years standing. John was preceded in death by his wife, Pat. He is survived by his sons, Dr. Daniel (Mary), Mark (Mary Jo Hanson), Paul (Kim); grandchildren: Katie, John, Sarah, Laura, Tim, Tom and Tony; 9 great grandchildren; his special friend, Sharon Lehman; many relatives and friends. There will be a funeral service at 11:00am on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 3214 Golf Road, Eau Claire with Rev. Jamie Brieske officiating. Visitation will be held 4pm - 7pm Friday, June 7, 2024 at WEST CHAPEL - Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral and Cremation Services, 1405 N.
