Obituary

JOHN G. GOBERVILLE, 74, of Marshfield and formerly of Altoona, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998 at St. Joseph's Hospital-Hospice Care in Marshfield. He was born on January 31, 1924 in Lily, Wisconsin to John B. and Lulu(Manning)Goberville.\r\nJohn attended Antigo High School, graduating in 1942. He immediately joined the Navy and received his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Upon graduation, he enlisted in Submarine School and graduated from Submarine, Radio, and Sonar School. He was then transferred to the Queenfish, a new submarine, just commissioned in Port Smith, NH, which was assigned to the Pacific theater of operations. He served aboard the Queenfish for all five of its patrols. He was awarded the Submarine Combat Insignia with three Gold Stars, the Bronze Star Medal, the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with three Gold Stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation. John was discharged from the Navy on December 14, 1945, with the rank of Radioman First Class.\r\nHe married Phyllis Roemer in 1943. John married Bernice Lau on June 9, 1951.\r\nOn September 23, 1947, John was appointed Wisconsin Conservation Warden, stationed at Tomahawk,WI. In 1948 he received his private pilots license and was one of the first conservation wardens to utilize the airplane as an effective tool in conservation law enforcement. In 1958 he was appointed as a special agent to investigate commercial violations of natural resources on a state wide basis. On July 1, 1964 he was appointed as one of the first District Warden Supervisors and assigned to Spooner,WI.\r\nThroughout his career as a conservation warden, he was very active in recreational safety programs. He initiated one of the first hunter safety programs in 1953. When the Federal Boating Safety Act became effective, he and two other wardens, in cooperation with the American Red Cross, conducted statewide training in high schools on water-related safety rules and regulations. He continued in safety programs related to outdoor activities until his retirement in 1980.\r\nJohn married Gail (Perkins) Sealander on December 14, 1996 in Marshfield,WI.\r\nHe was a life member VFW Post #305,Eau Claire, the U.S. Submarine Veterans, and the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.\r\nSurvivors included his wife, Gail; three sons, Brad (Linda) Goberville and grandson, Samuel Goberville of Big Lake, MN, and Gary and Bruce Goberville; two daughters, Joy Lyn Goberville of Southfield, MI and Susan Goberville; numerous other grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Richardson of Amasa, MI.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Floyd.\r\nMemorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Church, 2361 N. Hastings Way, Eau Claire with Pastor Philip Palser officiating. Friends may call an hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in the town of Farmington, Waupaca County, WI, prior to services. Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home is serving the family.
