John J. Harter, age 75, of Eleva, WI, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Eau Claire. John was born on March 27, 1940, in Prairie du Chien, WI, the son of John H. and Margaret (Johnston) Harter. He graduated from Seneca High School in 1958. John married the love of his life, Karen Feeney, on August 22, 1964, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Viroqua, WI. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary last year. John was employed at Retreat Cheese Factory and Viroqua Creamery, where he was a licensed cheese maker. Moving to Eau Claire in 1966, he worked as a laborer in construction and later as a Union steam fitter until his retirement in 2001. He was also an insurance agent for Catholic Order of Foresters from which he retired in March 2015. He was an avid bowler and golfer, enjoyed playing horseshoes, card games and much more. John and Karen enjoyed traveling, making trips to bowling tournaments and casinos. John was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eau Claire. John is survived by his wife, Karen; three brothers, Bernard (Jane) Harter, Jim (Cindy) Harter and Dan (Renae) Harter, all of Viroqua; three sisters, Janet Lucey of Holmen, Mary Ann (Ted) Duncan of Onalaska, and Rita (Fred) Clary of Richland Center,; two sisters-in-law, Sister Rita Feeney of La Crosse, and Alise Feeney of Eau Claire; and one brother-in-law, Ralph Statz of Eau Claire. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and a great-great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Harter; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Josephine Feeney; sister-in-law, Shirley Statz; and brother in law, Raymond Feeney. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to St. Francis Food Pantry, 1221 Truax Blvd. Eau Claire, WI 54703, or Feed My People, 2610 Alpine Rd. Eau Claire, WI 54703. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m., at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave. in Eau Claire. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 416 N.
