John M. Marcon, 71, of Altoona, WI, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. John was born on January 23, 1943, in Eau Claire, a son of Matthew and Catherine (Neibauer) Marcon. John attended Regis High School, where he met his future wife, Janet Spaeth, whom he married on April 25, 1964. They had three children together. John spent many years working for his father-in-law, as a manager at Roy's Supermarket on Clairemont Ave. in Eau Claire. Later in his career, John worked as a tax assessor for Bowmar Appraisal and as a crop insurance adjustor. John enjoyed both professions, as he was able to travel the state of Wisconsin, visiting a variety of farms and meeting many different people. John proudly served on the Altoona City Council from 1976 to 1979. During retirement, John rediscovered model trains, which would be his life's creative passion. He loved to meet other collectors to exchange ideas and inspiration. Due to the time, effort and imaginative craft he put into his hobby, John received much recognition, including being featured in a 2010 issue of "Classic Toy Trains" magazine. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet; daughter, Christina (Jay) Kochendorfer of Hastings, MN; two sons, Eric (Lori) Marcon of Eau Claire and Michael Marcon of Altoona; five wonderful grandchildren, Lyric, Kaylee, Croix, Paige and Alivia; and his mother-in-law, Arlene Spaeth of Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Roy Spaeth. John dearly loved his family, friends, and being a grandfather. He lived a life that was defined by endless curiosity, wistful thinking, keeping busy and his love of animals of all kinds. For those who knew him, John will be most remembered for his friendly smile, his openness to strangers, his wittiness, and his amazing sense of humor.
