Kristine A. Mason, 50, of Eau Claire, died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at her lake home in the town of Land O' Lakes, Vilas County, Wisconsin. Her two cats, Fletcher and Poco died at her side. She was born on March 24, 1951 in Antigo, Wisconsin to Henry and Margaret (Helgeson) Mason.\r\nShe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation at UW-La Crosse, in 1973 and her Master's degree in Library Science in 1976. Kris's 26-year career as Media Specialist in Eau Claire allowed her to work with the best teachers in the world throughout the district. She was fondly known as "The Bat Lady" due to her efforts to educate young and old alike about bats.\r\nKris was an active member of the Chippewa Valley Sierra Club, Historic Preservation Foundation, Eau Claire Landmarks Commission, Otter Creek Garden Club, and the Eau Claire Friends of the Library.\r\nSurvivors include Jane Schley of Eau Claire; her mother, Margaret Mason; brother, Gene (Helen) Mason both of Appleton; sister, Barbara Mason; niece, Kay Hopfensperger both of Henderson, NV; nephew, Jay Hopfensperger of Ft. Worth,TX; niece, Sherry Mason of Las Vegas, NV; and uncle, Luther (Vivi) Mason of Green Valley, AZ.\r\nHer father preceded her in death.\r\nVisitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2002 at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home with a Memorial Service to follow at 6 p.m.\r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute-Loon Watch, Northland College, Ashland, WI or the Eau Claire County Humane Association.
