Lawrence A. Hagens, age 91, passed away at The Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation on Tuesday, February 18, 2014. He was born August 12, 1922, to William and Henrietta (Gerrits) Hagens on a farm near Loyal, Wisconsin. He left the farm to join the Navy during World War II where he was a member of the crew that commissioned the U.S.S. Midway. After an honorable discharge from the service he moved to Eau Claire where he and Maridean I. Vick were united in marriage on June 5, 1948, at St. Patrick's Church. Larry is lovingly survived by Mary, his wife of 65 years and their seven children and spouses: Sandra (Gerald) Hanson, Little Rock, AR; Richard (Barbara) Hagens, Sun Prairie; Cynthia (John) Swenson, New Auburn; Barbara (Steven) Running, Eau Claire; Nancy (Mike) Caven, Ashland; Kathleen (Thomas) Vande Berg, Baldwin; Suzanne ( Chris) Golden, Marshfield. Also surviving Larry Hagens are 15 grandchildren and their spouses and 14 great-grandchildren; his brother, Robert (Gerri), Cookeville, TN; and his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hagens, Bloomington, MN. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and five of his six siblings. Larry worked at Dolly Madison Dairies, later Marigold Foods/Kemps, for 40 years. Larry and Mary were charter members of St. James the Greater Parish. Larry was the only surviving member of the St. James the Greater Church Building Committee. He was a lifelong volunteer giving many hours to St. James and installing Lifeline connections for Sacred Heart Hospital after retirement. Larry enjoyed ballroom dancing and 50 years of square dancing with Merry Mixers Square Dance Club. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and treasured memories of trips in The States and Europe. "Mr. Fixit" to his children and grandchildren, he was a skilled and innovative problem solver. The family would like to thank the staff at The Clairemont and St. Joseph's Hospice of Chippewa Falls for the wonderful care he received over the past 9 months. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St., Eau Claire with Fr. John A. Schultz officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at church. Interment will be at Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery in Eau Claire. Memorials may be designated in Larry's name to St. James the Greater Church or St. James School.
