Leo N. Klidzejs, 83, of Eau Claire, passed away Friday, June 16, 2023 at his residence. Leo was born April 14, 1940 in Riga, Latvia to Leopolds and Tekla (Rubulis) Klidzejs. He moved to America in 1949 with his parents and they resided in Des Moines IA. He attended Dowling Catholic High School where he started his football career. He played college football for Loras College in Dubuque, IA and Drake University in Des Moines, IA. Leo played semi pro for the Delavan Red Devils and the Racine Raiders in Wisconsin. He continued with his football career by coaching in the Chicago Catholic League. Leo entered the Marines in 1963 and was stationed Paris Island, South Carolina. He taught elementary level education in the Chicago School District up until his retirement. In 2016 he moved to Eau Claire and substitute taught. Leo was known for his love of animals especially his dogs. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. One of his families treasured memories will be the annual men's trip to Hayward. He loved the outdoors and anything to do with it. He loved to travel back to his homeland to visit his family and friends. Leo loved going to the gym and watching any and all sports. He was survived by his sons, Mike (Stacey), Dan (Shanna) and Andy (Meggan); grandchildren, Justin, Emilee, Hartlin, Ethan, Raina and Auden; brother, Aleks (Norma); sister, Angie (Gunar); nephews, Tom and Stefan; his cousin Ainars (Sandra); his wonderful, caring neighbor Whitney White; his dog, Ivy; along with many cousins and family in the U.S. and Latvia. He will be loved and missed by all. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leopolds and Tekla and his beloved dogs, Phoenix and Tuscon. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:30pm on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11st Street, Eau Claire with Father Tom Krieg officiating. A visitation will be 1 hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be following the mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Eau Claire. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW 8514.
