Lila Marie Peterson, 77, of Altoona, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Heritage Court in Eau Claire. Lila was born on the family farm in the Town of Ludington in Eau Claire Co., on September 14, 1935, to Joseph and Gena (Knudtson) Rosenthal. She went to Sunnyview Elementary School in Eau Claire Co., which is now located on the grounds of the Chippewa Valley Museum in Carson Park, and Oak Grove School in the Town of Drammen. Lila graduated from Mondovi High School in 1953. She went on to study bookkeeping at the technical school in Eau Claire. Lila married Lynn Peterson on September 6, 1958, at Drammen Lutheran Church in Eau Claire Co. They moved to Madison where she worked at the Department of Transportation while Lynn finished his Engineering degree at the University of Wisconsin. Following Lynn's graduation, they returned to the Eau Claire area, eventually settling in Altoona where they raised their three children. In 1977, Lila took a position with the United Way as a bookkeeper where she worked for 13 years before retiring. She was an avid walker and was well-known in Altoona and in the Lower Long Lake area not only for how often she walked, but also for her fast pace. Lila was very active in her church and the Altoona community, serving in the church circle and in the Altoona Women's Club, where she was a past president. She liked to spend time with her family and friends at the family cottage on Lower Long Lake and at her home in Altoona. Lila also enjoyed spending time in the sun and going south for the winter. Lila is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lynn Peterson of Altoona; three children, Michael (Beth) of Lower Long Lake, James (Pamela) of Walnut Creek, CA and Lower Long Lake, and Kathleen of Inver Grove Heights, MN; four grandchildren, Derek, Chester, Michael, and Chloe'; five siblings, Elaine (Harold) Goetz, Burnard Rosenthal, Raymond (Ellen) Rosenthal, Wilma (Alan) Miland and Beverly (Richard) Brion; and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Lois Rosenthal and Arline Grorud. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church 1804 Highland Ave. in Eau Claire with Pastor Nathan Aaseng officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Gardens Cemetery in the Town of Washington, Eau Claire Co.
