Lucille "Cele" Ione Whelan, 89, of Eau Claire, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at Clearwater Care Center, in Eau Claire. Lucille was born on August 26, 1926, in Eau Claire to David and Irene (Dudenhoefer) Garton. After attending Elk Mound High School for 2 years, she went on to graduate from Eau Claire High School in 1944. On November 12, 1947, Lucille married Declan W. Whelan at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Eau Claire. In addition to being a wonderful and dedicated mother and wife, she enjoyed many and varied interests including traveling, shopping, reading up on current events, volunteering at Sacred Heart Hospital, playing cards and bingo, swimming, golfing, bowling, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs. Lucille is survived by her two children, Mary Whelan of Medford Lakes, NJ and Patrick Whelan (Donna Nordstrom) of Ottawa, IL; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Declan in 1986; parents; brothers, Robert, Oscar and David Garton; and sister, Ethel Loga. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St. in Eau Claire with Father John Schultz officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Eau Claire.
