Marlys A. Root, age 84 of Altoona, died peacefully on November 5, 2013, at the Fall Creek Valley Care Center. She was born to Emil and Nora (Hysen) Johnson in Eau Claire WI, on March 25, 1929. Marlys married Herbert Root on May 17, 1958, at First Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. She was known for her adventurous life style, which consisted of traveling throughout the world, attending many cultural events, as well as going to her children and grandchildren's activities, and singing in the church choir. She was a volunteer at Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire for over 20 years. She also spent many hours volunteering at First Lutheran Church. "Giving Back" was a lot of her life. Marlys is survived by her three sons, Eric (Jackie) of Denver CO, Richard (Diann) of Kenosha WI, and Paul (Tammy) of Oakdale MN; grandsons, Josh, Sam and Blake; brother, Roger (Shirley) Johnson; sisters, Leone "Onie" Helstrom and Janet Boullion; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb; sister-in-law, Sandra Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Keith Helstrom and Jim Boullion. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 10, 2013, from 3 to 6 PM at Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Avenue, Eau Claire. Funeral Service will be at 11 AM on Monday, at First Lutheran Church, 1005 Oxford Avenue, Eau Claire, with a visitation one hour prior to the service at Church. Pastors Amy Odgren and Lowell Halvorson will be officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview cemetery, Eau Claire. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or Colfax Lutheran Church, 601 River St. Colfax WI, 54730.
