Obituary

Marvin A. "Joe" Lemke, 75, of Altoona died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He was born on May 4, 1926 in Almond, Wisconsin, the son of Max and Mollie (Pomerenke) Lemke.\r\nJoe married Lois Morgan on May 20, 1944 in Almond, WI. He entered the U.S. Army on January 30, 1945. He was a member of the 13th Field Artillery, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Following his honorable discharge in October 1946, Joe and Lois lived in Almond, the Stevens Point area and Wausau before moving to Altoona in 1969. \r\nJoe was an over-the-road truck driver for 24 years retiring from Glenndenning Motorways in 1976.\r\nHe was a member of the Mead-Rath-Gutke Legion Post #339 in Almond and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Eau Claire.\r\nSurvivors include his wife, Lois; four children, Arlene (Jerome) Austreng, Escondido, CA, Sonja (David) Scott, Waynesville, MO, Richard (Theresa) Lemke, IL, and Carol (William Hawke) Lemke, Eau Claire; eight grandchildren, Collin (Laura) Austreng, Murrieta, CA, Sheila (Terry) Turner, Dublin, OH, Michael (Laura) Sowinski, Sun Prairie, WI, Laurie (Bruce Kapellen) Sowinski, Schofield, WI, Mark Lambrecht, Columbus, OH, Amy (Jerome) Martinek, Chippewa Falls, WI and Keith and Brian Lemke, CA; six great-grandchildren, Amber, Tyler, and Austin Sowinski, Schofield, WI, Andrew and Samantha Austreng, Murrieta, CA and Keaton Martinek, Chippewa Falls, WI; two brothers, William (Jackie) Lemke, Fred (Louise) Lemke and one sister, Dorothy King all of Almond, WI; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Morgan, Weyauwega, WI; many other relatives and friends, especially his walking and fishing pal, Lovell Golden of Altoona, WI.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Paulette Sowinski; two brothers-in-law, Donald King and LaVern Morgan.\r\nFuneral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001 at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd with Pastor Paul D.L. Oppedahl officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park in Wausau where American Legion Post #10 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and an hour prior to services Friday at the church.
