She grew up on a farm\r\noutside of Manannah, MN and attended the District 51 one room school\r\nuntil the seventh grade. At Litchfield\r\n High School she served as\r\neditor of the school paper and the first female president of the student\r\ncouncil. At the College\r\n of St. Catherine she was\r\neditor of the yearbook and active in student government. In 1961 she graduated from\r\nSt. Kate's with a major in English education and began teaching high school\r\nEnglish at Browerville, MN. She also taught in Ely, MN and Bemidji\r\nState College where she met and married Preston Bissell. In 1968 they moved to Norman, OK where Mary Kay\r\ntaught in the education department of the University of Oklahoma.\r\n\r\nIn 1971 they moved to Eau Claire and Mary Kay\r\nspent the next 30 years teaching literature and writing at Regis High School.\r\nDuring vacations she and Preston traveled the world,\r\nvisiting over 50 countries. After retiring from Regis she worked ten years as coordinator\r\nof campus ministry for Newman Parish.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMary Kay won many honors in her lifetime: Girls State\r\nofficer, Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow, an NSF grant which paid for her master's\r\ndegree program at the U of M, a Herb Kohl Outstanding Teacher Award, sixteen\r\nannual EC Chamber Outstanding Teacher awards, the Fr.\r\nJohn Rossiter Award, and the Regis Non Sibi Award, the Terese Lasser American\r\nCancer Society Award for her 25 years of training volunteers in Wisconsin. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn retirement she was active in all phases of the Community\r\nTable, a library volunteer and a hospice volunteer. She was a member of Delta Kappa\r\nGamma and PEO, Chaper AF. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nShe loved teaching, cooking, good stories, old friends,\r\npuzzles and traveling. \r\n\r\nMary Kay is survived by her mother, Anne Brummer; a foster daughter, Mollie Bailey and her sons, Connor\r\nand Riley of Heathrow FL; sisters, Ann Tacheny (Joe), Rita Holm, Rosie Brummer;\r\nand brother, Hank Brummer (Barb Ekstrand); and five nieces. She was\r\npreceded in death by her husband, Preston in\r\n2007.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMass of Christian Burial will be at 11am, on Wednesday, June\r\n22, 2011, at the Newman Parish in the Ecumenical Religious\r\n Center on the UW Eau\r\nClaire Campus, 110 Garfield Ave,\r\n Eau Claire with Father George\r\nSzews officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass at Church.\r\nInterment will be at a later date.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regis High\r\n School or Eau Claire Community Table.
