Obituary

Mary Louise Day, 101, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin - July 22, 2025

Mary Louise Lange was born on March 16, 1924 to Gustave & Jesse (Tait) Lange of Stanley, Wisconsin; she was raised there and graduated with the Stanley High School class of 1942.

Mary Louise (affectionately known as "Weezie", a nickname she held onto for her entire life) fondly recalled an idyllic childhood growing up in the then bustling town of Stanley with her three siblings, her parents that she so loved and a host of friends and relatives.

After high school, Weezie attended business school in Eau Claire and then worked at several businesses there. She made friends with fellow student Audree Dickinson when both found room & board with Glenn & Gladys Day. The Day's eldest son George, a dashing young Marine, came home on leave from WWII and in storybook fashion, love was planted, blossomed and grew to the point where Mary Louise Lange and George William Day were married on March 16, 1946. (Audree and Stanley Ayres, Gladys' youngest brother, also fell in love and were married – making friends into family for life.) Weezie & George started their family soon thereafter.

Weezie and George also founded and operated the family business Day Music, an institution lasting for 30 years from 1948 to 1978. In addition to raising her 3 sons during that time, Weezie worked shoulder to shoulder with her husband in the business, taking care of the books and finances. Although George was the renowned musician of the family, she was an accomplished pianist herself , but chose to play mostly at home; Weezie graciously supported her husband in his music groups and gigs for their entire marriage.

Weezie was the indispensable foundation of the Day family and she made everything else possible. While her husband was running the store during the day and playing music in various venues many evenings of the week, she was raising three boys in a very busy household on top of her business duties. She ensured her boys and her husband were fully supported in everything they did: business, musical pursuits, education, church, scouts, sports, theatre, camps, camping, Canadian fishing trips, traveling troubadour shows (e.g. The Maggie & Scottie Show), not to mention welcoming the plethora of friends and relatives that seemed always present at the Day household!

Weezie was selflessly involved in the lives of her family, even devoting her precious little free time to them and others as a church lady at the First Presbyterian Church (volunteer bookkeeper, Sunday School Director and Teacher, session member, visitation crew member, telephone call crew member, card crew member, transportation crew member, kitchen crew member and more); she was also the family chef, cook, and bottle-washer, pet wrangler, Halloween costume-creator extraordinaire, homework helper and enforcer, baby-sitter and inventor of games providing limitless fun for her children AND grandchildren. The few indulgences she allowed herself included being a master crossworder and solver of all types of puzzles, writing verse and poems, and playing in the same bridge club with close friends for over 60 years.

Weezie was the embodiment of love and kindness, as well as the very definition of sweetness and caring. She was always sporting a twinkle in her eyes and had an impish sense of humor and infectious laugh. Despite the physical and mental challenges living such a long life poses, Weezie lived both gracefully and graciously to the end and was greatly loved and will be missed by all!
