Obituary

Mary Jane Raehl, age 101, died peacefully in her daughter's home in Eau Claire on January 8, 2024. Mary Jane was born on a farm in Winneconne, Wisconsin on March 29, 1922, to Marie and Roy Schermerhorn. She attended Ball Prairie 8-grade school and graduated from Winneconne High School in 1939, where she had been a baton twirler and cheerleader. After a year at Oshkosh Business College, she was employed in the County Extension Office as a secretary until her marriage to Robert Raehl in 1944. Mary Jane and Bob loved and raised six children in Muskegon, Michigan. Mary Jane was active in the Girl and Boy Scouts and was president of St. Joseph's Home and School. She was a member of the St. Francis Women's Guild and a long-time volunteer with Catholic Social Services and the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop. Mary Jane was an avid gardener, card-player and Scrabble whiz. She reluctantly retired her tap shoes after three years with the Happy Tappers in Traverse City, Michigan in her seventies. She and Bob enjoyed traveling the world to visit their children, with Italy, Hawaii, Germany and Alaska being highlights. Memories abound of good times with children and grandchildren at their Big Blue Lake cottage. Mary Jane moved back to Wisconsin in 2015 to be near her daughter Deb and family in her final years. Not one to keep to herself, she quickly befriended staff and fellow residents first at East Ridge Senior Apartments and then at Orchard Hills Assisted Living. The love "Emjay" gave throughout her life was returned in kind. She is survived by four sons-Roger (Barb) Raehl of Traverse City, MI; Michael (Bobbie) Raehl of St. Charles, IL; Richard (Mel) of Virginia Beach, VA; David (Sandra) Raehl of Grand Rapids, MI- and two daughters-Marita Hills of Grand Rapids, MI and Deborah (Mary Lee) Raehl of Eau Claire. Mary Jane is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, of 59 years, her parents and 4 siblings. Mary Jane's family is ever grateful for the loving, compassionate care she received from Dr. Joan Hamblin, St. Joe's Hospice, the staff at Orchard Hills Assisted Living facility, and Christina Ho. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, January 12, 2024, with Fr. Tom Krieg officiating at St James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th Street, Eau Claire. Visitation will be Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 5:00-6:30PM with a prayer service at 6:30PM at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral & Cremation Services, 814 1st Avenue, Eau Claire, and again 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church. Final internment will occur at St. Mary's cemetery in Muskegon, MI. Online condolences may be shared at www.lenmarkfh.com.
