Mary Jane Smith, 84, of Eau Claire, died Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, MN, surrounded by her family. She was born in Strum, WI on January 10, 1926, a daughter of George and Cora (Gilbertson) Flaten. \r\nShe graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School with the class of 1943.\r\nMary Jane married Harold M. Smith on March 7, 1946, in Eau Claire at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. \r\nShe worked as a telephone operator at Midelfort Clinic from 1976 to 1986.\r\nShe was a charter member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church, served on various church committees and was a member of St. James Rosary Confraternity\r\nMary expressed her love for her family and many others with her creativity and giving nature.\r\nMary Jane is survived by her husband, Harold; six children, Michael (Julie) Smith of Middleton, Susan (Ted) Voigt-Spanbauer of Round Top, TX, Mary Clare (Joe) Blanchard of Antigo, Paul (Jane) Smith of Weston, Timothy (Hope) Smith of Eagan, MN, and Kari (Michael Barrett) Schmitt of Eau Claire; thirteen grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren; brother, Roger (Joanne) Flaten of Eau Claire; many nieces and nephews. \r\nShe was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Jeffrey Voigt; three brothers, Horace, Jerome and Lester Flaten; and her sister, Minerva Flaten. \r\nMass of Christian burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church with Father John A. Schultz officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum in Eau Claire. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave, Eau Claire, and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. There will be a Public Prayer Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.\r\nFamily requests memorials be directed to St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St., Eau Claire, WI 54703.
