Melvern Elton Wesenberg died quietly at his home in the early hours of Nov. 17 attended by family members, caregiver and friend Carrie Hoeft and St. Joseph's Hospice. Mel was born on August 28, 1921, in Bloomer, Wisconsin, to William Wesenberg and Esther (Boettcher) Wesenberg. He graduated from Bloomer High School and then served in the army during World War II as an airplane mechanic in the Pacific Theatre. After the war Mel went to work for Sears Roebuck in Eau Claire, where he met his future wife, Marion Janke. He advanced in his career at Sears, rising to senior buyer in Chicago where he had an office in the Sears Tower. He traveled the world buying cloth for Sears' men's work clothes and Marion was sometimes able to accompany him on his travels. After his successful career at Sears and raising four children, Mel and Marion retired and moved back to Eau Claire. Mel built his dream cottage near Birchwood where he pursued his true passion - fishing. Mel was also an avid gardner and loved growing vegetables and flowers. Mel is survived by his four children, Marylee Mynett (Tom), Joan Johnsen, (Denny), Mark Wesenberg, (Nancy), and Jon Wesenberg; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Wesenberg; his sister, Gladys Wesenberg; his brothers, Dale, Roydon and Glen Wesenberg; and his grandson, Michael Thomas Mynett. Mel's family would like to express their gratitude to St Joseph's Hospice and to the wonderful caregivers that helped Mel's children care for both Mel and Marion in their final years: Carrie Hoeft, Lori Quint, Anna Price, and Tanya Hansen. They were truly patient and compassionate. The family requests that any memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation. A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Avenue, Eau Claire with Pastor Nathan Aaseng officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at a later date in Rest Haven Cemetery, Town of Washington.
