Michael "Mike" J. Welter, age 73, of Mondovi, (Brunswick Township), died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Mike was born on June 30, 1943, in Milwaukee, WI, to Robert and Elaine (Milton) Welter. He was a 1961 graduate of Memorial High School in Eau Claire and went on to get a degree from St. Paul Vocational Technical Institute in St. Paul, MN. Mike worked for Univac until 1971 and moved to Eau Claire. This is when he married Joyce Bergstrand at St. James the Greater Catholic Church. He worked for Ed Phillips and Son until 1977, when he and Joyce bought and operated Club 37 until 1985. Mike was an entrepreneur and always had an investment in mind. He then operated the Labor Temple from 1986 to 1994. He went back to Club 37 from 1991 to the later 1990's. He became part owner in the Mounds View Mini Mart in Elk Mound and also operated Pine Meadows and during this time, owned and operated Eau Claire Lawn Equipment. Because of his sales, he was nicknamed, "Snapper-Mike." In his earlier years, Mike enjoyed skiing, playing volleyball and softball, and later on he liked playing golf. Mike loved socializing and had "the gift of gab". He was a member of the Moose Lodge, The Tavern League of Wisconsin, Maple Manor and Eau Claire Elks Club, where the other members were like "extended family". Mike is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Tanya (Jason) Kistner and Amanda (Jeff Miller) Welter; two grandchildren, Brock and Brianna Kistner; two sisters, Nancy Hietpas and Barbara (Warren) Swenson; other relatives and many, many friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Elaine Welter; and one brother-in-law, Nick Hietpas. Funeral Services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2017, at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave, Eau Claire, with Pastor David Irgens officiating. Visitation will be held from Noon until time of service at the funeral home. After the service, a celebration of life will continue and friends may join us as at the Elks Lodge #402, 3411 Stein Blvd. in Eau Claire.
