Miriam A. Carr, 94, of Eau Claire, a woman of faith, family, and service, died at home surrounded by loved ones on May 15, 2017, on her birthday. She was born May 15, 1923, in Eau Claire to Miriam (Eastman) and Louis Arnold, the fifth of six children. She lived here much of her life. She married Frank Carr in Virginia in 1945, having met him in 1942, while attending college in Boston. He was preparing to embark for the European Theater of WWII. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1944, Miriam worked as a chemist on the Manhattan Project. Upon Frank's return from WWII, they were married on July 28, 1945, and resided in Blacksburg, VA, while he completed his civil engineering degree. They returned to Eau Claire and Frank began to work for LG Arnold, Inc. Miriam became an active part of her community, and together they raised a family of five; Amy (Greg) Caucutt, Mary (Warren) Luckner, John (Gwendolyn) Carr, Tom (Kristine) Carr, and Bob (Julie) Carr. Their lives were enriched by 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren of whom they were very proud. Family was important to both of them as shown by their attendance at all of the high school and college graduations, as well as the weddings of their grandchildren. Miriam worked for the US Bureau of Standards on the Manhattan Project 1944-1945. After returning to college and earning a degree in Environmental and Public Health from UW Eau Claire in 1976, she worked as a sanitarian for the Eau Claire City-County Health Department and as an Executive Director of the Eau Claire Visiting Nurse Association. Later, she worked with her husband at Carr Associates. An avid knitter from her pre-teen years into college, participating in the "knitten for Britain" project, Miriam knitted sweaters for lucky grandchildren, baby caps (some with her famous Green Bay Packer motif) for newborns at Sacred Heart Hospital, and personalized Christmas stockings for many mantles in Eau Claire. She was a selfless volunteer in Eau Claire for over 60 years. Some of the many organizations in which she took an active part were the Hospice & Cancer Center at Sacred Heart Hospital, where she was recognized for her thousands of hours of service, founding member of Feed My People Food Bank, Eau Claire's Habitat for Humanity, Girl Scout & Cub Scout Leadership, PTA, DAR, PEO, Wellesley College Alumnae Association, Service League, Commission on Aging, Eau Claire Citizens Advisory Board for Urban Development Block Grants, WI Environmental Health Association, Book Clubs, Duplicate Bridge, Christ Church Cathedral Altar Guild, Vestry, and Elevator Committee. She was still actively participating two weeks before her death. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Frank, in 2015; her parents; and her siblings. The family requests no flowers, memorials may be directed to Christ Church Cathedral Elevator Fund. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Christ Church Cathedral, 510 S. Farwell St. in Eau Claire. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the services on Saturday, at the church. Burial will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire.
