NORMAN LOSBY, 80, of 332 South Michigan St., died Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at his home. He was born April 1, 1917 in Eau Claire to George J. and Josephine (Hanson) Losby. He graduated from UW-Madison in 1940, with a B.A. in Business. He worked at the Farmers Store, and then the Eau Claire ordinance plant until joining the Army in 1942. He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Airforce during W.W.II, as a radio operator gunner, with the 43rd Bombardment Group, 65th Squadron aboard a B-24 Bomber, and was discharged in 1946. Following the war, Norman and his brother, Alden purchased the Eau Claire Ice and Fuel Co., where Norman was manager, until he was appointed Postmaster in Eau Claire, by President Eisenhower in 1954. He served as Postmaster until his retirement in 1972.He married Norma Brekke on April 19, 1948 in Stillwater,MN. Norma died in 1991. Norman married Doris Arnold in Stillwater on Sept. 25, 1991.\r\nNorman was a life member of First Lutheran Church where he served in various capacities. He was a life member of the Salvation Army Board, Scandinavian American Fraternity, The Morning Optimist Club and VFW Post #305, a fifty year member of American Legion Post #53, and Camper Chairman for the Boy Scouts for many years. \r\nSurvivors include his wife, Doris; two nephews, Donald (Therese) Losby and George (Mary Kay) Losby both of Eau Claire; a niece Josephine (Kenneth) Hanson of Eau Claire; three step-sons, Dr. Louis (Mary Jo) Arnold of Columbus,OH, Richard Arnold of Eau Claire and Dean Arnold of Chicago,IL; a step-daughter, Barbara Arnold of Austin,TX; and many great-nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alden; a sister, Idele Losby; and a niece, Marion Losby Johnson.\r\nNorman spent many enjoyable days at "Rum Dums" the camp on the Flambeau River, which he and some friends purchase in 1948, for their hunting and fishing. In his later years, he enjoyed getting together with friends a couple times a week for playing pool, cribbage, and when football season arrived, to talk about the Packers and Badgers. \r\nFuneral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert E. Esse officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home and an hour prior to services, Saturday at the church.\r\nThe family requests that memorials, be directed to the First Lutheran Church Foundation.
