ORLEN H. FRIEDE, 77, of 9324 27th Ave., Town of Hallie, died Thursday, December 24, 1998 at Luther Hospital. He was born February 2, 1921 to Henry and Hulda (Meyer) Friede in Reedsburg, Wisc. Orlen graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School with the class of 1938. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942, served during World War II, and was honorably discharged as Boatswain Mate 2nd Class on Sept. 25, 1945. \r\nOn August 11,1946, he married Norma (Kummer) Smuhl in Eau Claire. Orlen was a structural draftsman at Phoenix Steel Inc., for thirty-one years, until retiring in 1983. \r\nHe was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and Hallie Golf Course.\r\nSurvivors include two sons, Leonard of Port Washington, Wisc., and Gary of Eau Claire; a daughter, Karol Ann (Larry) Scoles of Brooklyn Center, MN; two grandchildren, Kristina and Jeffrey Scoles; two brothers, Eldon (Donna) of Blair and William (Iris) of Vadnais Heights, MN; and several nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; and a grandson, Tim.\r\nFuneral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Epiphany Lutheran Church, with Pastor Brent L. Parrish officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery in the Town of Hallie. Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of services Monday at the church. Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home is serving the family.\r\nFamily requests that memorials be directed to Epiphany Lutheran Foundation.
