Peter Orth Jr., 87, of the town of Union died Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at his home. He was born in Eau Claire on August 12, 1922, the son of Peter and Marguerite (Bien) Orth. \r\nHe entered active service in the U.S. Navy on November 10, 1942. Peter served aboard the U.S.S. Springfield in the Pacific Theatre for the duration of the war. He escorted President Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference. He served in combat from the Marshall Islands through to the signing of surrender of the Japanese in Tokyo Bay. Peter was honorably discharged on March 15, 1946.\r\nPeter raised pigs on his farm, and was a self employed contractor.\r\nHe was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and American Legion Post #53.\r\nPeter had a life-long passion for fishing and hunting. He was a member of the "Exclusive Ten Pound Club" on the Brule River in Wisconsin and fished for Steelhead and Sturgeon for 21 years in Nasalle, WA. \r\nPeter is survived by his wife, Clarice; two sons, John (Nancy) Orth and Jeffery (Joyce) Orth; his daughter, Patrice Orth- Van Riper all of Eau Claire; eight grandchildren; John (Angela) Orth of Eau Claire, Jeremiah (Lysa) Cogswell of Priest River, ID, Guy (LeAnn) Van Riper of Eau Claire, Chance Orth of Mpls., Ellie (Rudy) Van Riper of Stevens Point, Erik Van Riper of Savage, MN, Birch Orth and Cooper Orth both of Duluth, MN; five great grandchildren, Ryan, Samantha, Colin, Kayden, and Julian; two sisters, Dorothy Mooney of Eau Claire and Gretchen Gilbertson of Mondovi; and nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1310 Main St., Eau Claire with Rev. Jack L. Olson officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery in the Village of Hallie where American Legion Post #53 will present military honors. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church.
