Phyllis Marie Mattson, age 89 of Eau Claire, passed away on July 26, 2014, at Dove Healthcare West, in Eau Claire. Phyllis lived a life of service, touching the lives of many and those who knew her definitely had their lives blessed. She was born July 6, 1925, to Roy L. and Lois S. (Ortmann) Mattson in Eau Claire. Phyllis graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School, class of 1942. She earned a Nursing Degree in 1946, from Kahler Hospital School of Nursing, Rochester, MN. She was a member of the Retired Nurses and Eau Claire Junior League. Phyllis also volunteered for many years at the St. Francis Food Pantry and E.C. Regional Arts Center; always saying "yes" when asked to serve. Working 1946 to 1960, Phyllis held various jobs in the healthcare field. In 1960, she began her service at Sacred Heart Hospital, becoming the first Lay Person to be appointed as a Department Head. 1960 to 1990, she was the Director of Central Service and Sterilizing, retiring in 1990 at the age of 65. Phyllis is survived by her sister, Joanne (Patrick) Scheffler; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Bob (Florence) Mattson and Tom (Ivy) Mattson. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at the West Chapel of Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Avenue, Eau Claire, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Father Donald Meuret will be officiating. A private interment will be at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire. The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Frances Food Pantry, 1221 Truax Blvd, Eau Claire, WI 54703.
