Obituary

R. Bruce Borthwick, 73, of Alexandria, Virginia, died Thursday, December 18, 2003 in Alexandria. He was born in Eau Claire August 20, 1930, the son of Ernest and Ruth (Roehm) Borthwick. Bruce married Jacklyn Lekvin of Eau Claire on December 20, 1954. \r\nHe graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in 1948, and attended The University of Idaho in 1949 (NROTC). He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1953 and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1961. He earned his Ph.D. in Public Policy from George Mason University in 2001. \r\nBruce was an officer in the United States Navy from 1953-73, retiring as a Commander. During his naval career he was honored as a Commander with the Legion of Merit Medal and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. He worked for 17 years as a cost analyst and public policy consultant after his naval career. \r\nHe had a lifelong interest in youth competitive shooting sports and served as a coach and instructor for youth rifle clubs for over 30 years. \r\nHe is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jacklyn; his daughter, Joyce Borthwick and her husband Steven Daub of Minneapolis; his son, R. Paul Borthwick and his wife Grace Nogan of Howard County, MD; and two grandchildren, Brian and Stephanie Daub. \r\nFamily requests memorials directed to Youth Programs, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA 22302.\r\nFuneral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home with Rev. Eric G. Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery where VFW Post #305 will conduct military graveside rites. Family and friends may call from noon until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.\r\n
