Raymond G. "Gus" Martin, 84, formerly of Altoona, died Thursday, September 12, 2002 at the Dove Healthcare Nursing&Rehabilitation Center where he had been a resident for eight years. He was born on November 22, 1917 in the town of Washington, to Gustave and Villa (Markham) Marten. He attended Augusta High School, graduating in 1940.\r\nHe joined the U.S. Army Air Force on June 10, 1941 and was honorably discharged on October 30, 1945. After his discharge Raymond worked for T.R. Litchfield Garage, Briggs Transfer in the Twin Cities, Koppliens Tavern and then for Walter Brewery Company where he worked in the plant a few years and then operated own beer distributorship. He retired in 1979 after 21 years of service.\r\nRaymond married Nadine Erickson in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 31, 1943, they enjoyed 47 happy years together until the Lord took Nadine home in 1990.\r\nHe was a member of the American Legion Post #53 and a former long time member the Eau Claire Moose Lodge #1408.\r\nRaymond was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed many years at his cabin in Drapper, WI. Survivors include two sons, Gary Martin of Cypress, CA and Dale (Julie) Martin of Fall Creek; two daughters, Barbara (Jim) Gordon of Altoona and Linda (Jerry) Christianson of Eau Claire; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Ardell (Clare) Marten of LaHabra, CA.; nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine; his parents; four sisters, Florence Johnson, Leora Johnson, Virginia Abrams and Blanche Schimmelpfennig\r\nFuneral services will be at 11a.m. Monday, September 16, 2002 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Altoona, with Pastor David B. Karolus officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery where American Legion Post #53 will conduct military rites. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
