Raymond Ness, our beloved husband and father, left his earthly family on Monday, May 28, 2007, at Syverson Lutheran Home.\r\nRaymond was born at home on the family farm in Modena, Wisconsin on December 5, 1921, to Thomas and Anna Ness. He was one of six siblings (Leslie, Sylvia, James, Arnold, and Esther) all of whom preceded him in death.\r\nRay served in the US Armed Service three and a half years during World War II. After completing his service he attended Eau Claire Teachers' College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in science and math in 1950. He later completed his Master's Degree in guidance and counseling at Stout State University. \r\nRaymond taught mathematics for 32 years which included schools at Cornell and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Elsinore, California and the last 24 years at Central Jr. High in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He is remembered as a hard-working, no nonsense teacher.\r\nWhen he was not teaching Raymond loved to fish, play golf or work around his home. Ray was known for providing family and friends many good meals of pan fish, filleted with a skill that assured a bone-free treat.\r\nRaymond traveled reluctantly. One of his most famous quotes revolved around a proposed trip to Hawaii over Christmas break while he was still teaching: "This better be good; I'm giving up my entire vacation to go." He did, however accompany Pat to London, Norway, Alaska, Switzerland, Austria, a Caribbean Cruise, Mexico and multiple US sites.\r\nRaymond was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church for 47 years. He and Patricia Gourdoux were married at Grace while students at college in 1950. Their two daughters, Sherry Lynn and Vicki Rae were members of Grace throughout their youths.\r\nAs his age advanced physical disabilities became life-style limiting. Ray was on dialysis for three and a half years at the Luther/Mayo Dialysis Unit where he received quality care by the compassionate staff. He was able to remain at home until the last two months of his life. Syverson Lutheran Home staff continued his care with wonderful loving attention the last weeks.\r\nThe family will hold a quiet private service in the chapel at Syverson Lutheran Home. Pastor Debra Boynton will celebrate Ray's life with the family.\r\nRaymond is survived by Pat, his wife for 57 years. He also leaves his much loved family; Sherry Ness-Wenum (John Wenum), Vicki Rae Tessendorf; and four grandchildren whom he treasured, Thomas Tessendorf, Aaron Tessendorf, Catherine Wenum (Jeff) Dix and Jessica Wenum. \r\nWe must also remember his beloved beagles: Cassie and Muffin.\r\nMemorials are preferred to the Luther/Mayo Dialysis Unit, Luther Hospital- 5th Floor, 1221 Whipple St., Eau Claire, WI 54703, or to Syverson Lutheran Home Chapel, 816 Porter Ave., Eau Claire, WI 54701 will be appreciated. Most important, remember a loved one or friend who may be lonely due to physical impairment and visit that person to shed some light on an otherwise dull day.
