ROBERT W. GUNDERSON, 86, of 3038 Irene Dr., died Wednesday, November 4, 1998 at Luther Hospital. He was born on July 13, 1912 in Gilmanton, WI, to Emil and Hannah (Hawkinson) Gunderson. He graduated from UW-EC with a degree in education in 1933. Robert married Velma Helwig on August 28, 1939 in Lansing, Iowa. \r\nHe taught school in Hixton, Gilmanton and Mondovi and was a principal in Eleva.In 1945, he was appointed school superintendent in Broadview, IL, to School District 92. Robert served as principal / superintendent for 30 years before retiring in 1975 when he and Velma returned to Eau Claire. \r\nDuring his years in retirement he remained active in the community doing volunteer work at L.E. Phillips Library and Luther Hospital. He also had been a member and leader of the Sons of Norway, AARP, and Peace Lutheran Church.\r\nHe is survived by two sons, Robert (MaryAnn) of Canton,GA, and Thomas of Bloomingdale, IL; four grandchildren, Eric, Kristin, Dana, and Neil; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Coly Florin of Eau Claire.\r\nRobert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma in 1991; three brothers, Henry, ames and Fred Gunderson; and a sister, Esther Olson.\r\nFuneral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7th at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark W. Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Gilmanton Cemetery in the town of Gilmanton. Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday (Today) at Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home and an hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
