Robert L. Thompson, 77, of Eau Claire died Saturday, November 7, 2009, at Sacred Heart Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on March 24, 1932, in the Norwegian log house on the family farm in Davis Valley, Town of Dover, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, a son of Gilbert and Grace (Erickson) Thompson. \r\nHe served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Missouri when it ran aground going to Cuba, and was honorably discharged on February 15, 1950. \r\nRobert married Janice M. Block his wife of 55 years on September 25, 1954, in Eau Claire. \r\nHe worked 25 years as a custodian for CVTC, retiring in 1990. \r\nRobert loved to share his faith with others, and was a member of Chippewa Valley Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Altoona. He was a proud member of the Eau Claire Lodge #112 F&AM, a 32nd degree Mason of Eau Claire Scottish Rite, Valley of Eau Claire. \r\nHe enjoyed collecting and repairing antique clocks and watches, and playing the organ and harmonica for others.\r\nRobert is survived by his wife, Janice; two sons, Robert L. Thompson II, of Eau Claire and Dr. David J. (Dr. Margarita) Thompson of Livonia, Michigan; two granddaughters, Yana and Kalina Thompson; two sisters-in-law, Marge Thompson of Eau Claire and Thelma Thompson of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Chester and Gordon Thompson; and his sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and David Garton.\r\nMemorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at Chippewa Valley Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Altoona, 919 10th St., Altoona with Pastor Charles A. Byrd officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. A Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. American Legion Post #53 will present military honors following services Wednesday at the church.
