Obituary

Roberta I. Harriman, 79, of Altoona, died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at her home. She was born on August 9, 1923 in Eau Claire, the daughter of Glenn and Eldora (Rayment) Nelson. Roberta married Frank L. Harriman on August 21, 1943 at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. They farmed in the town of Pleasant Valley.\r\nAfter earning her Teaching Certificate from Eau Claire Teacher's College Roberta taught in one room school-houses at Cleghorn and Hillside Schools. She later received her Bachelor of Education degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1962. After her graduation she taught at Sands School near Eleva and then in Augusta beginning in 1963. They moved to Augusta in 1967 where she continued to teach until her retirement in 1980. At that time they moved to Altoona. Roberta cared for Frank until his death in 1991.\r\nRoberta was an active member of Lake Street United Methodist Church, member of Literacy Volunteers of America, a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital and St. Francis food pantry and St. Beede Monastery. She was a Benedictine Lay Associates of St. Beede Monastery since 1991. She was leader for an interdenominational Bible Study group in Altoona for many years. She was involved on the Altoona Library building committee.\r\nShe is survived by her son, Glenn (Robin Avery) of Gillette, WY; two granddaughters, Angela (Mike) Atkinson of Casper, WY and Nicki (Chris) Crandall of Arlington, WA; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Glenna (Louis) Brunner of Lake Oswego, OR, Nancy (Jim) Bullock of Riverside, CA and Donna (Jim) Brunt of Laurel, MD; and many nieces and nephews.\r\nRoberta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; brother, Dick Nelson; and sister, Kay Shrake.\r\nMemorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Lake Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Richard G. Maser officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in the Town of Pleasant Valley. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services Thursday at church. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.\r\nFamily suggests memorials be directed to Lake Street United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.
