Obituary

Sister Therese Roth, OSB, 95, died on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Saint Cloud Hospital following a prolonged history of heart problems. She was born on August 10, 1914 in La Crosse, WI, the ninth child of Leonard and Mary Roth.\r\nIn 1931, Sister Therese entered the religious life at Saint Benedict's Convent in St. Joseph, MN, and made her first profession of vows in 1934. She began her formal career in education at Marquette University and completed graduate work at George Peabody College at Nashville, TN.\r\nSister Therese was an innovative teacher acquiring many techniques at St. Scholastica College at Duluth where she spent several years as Director of Elementary Education.\r\nHer own teaching career began at St. Anne's School in Minneapolis. Following the establishment of Saint Bede Monastery in Eau Claire in 1948, her teaching skills expanded to schools in the La Crosse Diocese. Sister Therese was the first principal of the newly-opened St. Thomas More School in La Crosse while also serving as eighth grade teacher until 1955.\r\nFurther assignments guided her as Director of Elementary Education at St. Scholastica's College in Duluth, MN, at Instructional Materials Center in Richland Center, and at St. Mary's School in Altoona. In 1978 she became the principal of Cathedral School in La Crosse. She was also on the staff of Saint Bede Retreat Center until 1981.\r\nIll health forced her into semi-retirement residing at Regis Convent while working as Media Coordinator, substitute teacher, and a support to the entire staff. In 2003 she became a resident of the Clairemont Nursing Rehabilitation where her hobbies developed full force. Sister Therese spent hours crocheting lap robes, afghans, and baby coverlets for the poor in the Arctic and the Appalachian region in Kentucky. She loved playing cards, reading, and visiting with the many friends who kept contact with her over the years.\r\nHer former students always remembered her strict, but fair, discipline along with her quick smile and genuinely sincere manner in listening to and sharing in their problems and stories.\r\nA Prayer Service will be held at Saint Scholastica Convent in St. Cloud, MN on May 26 where she recently resided.\r\nThe Wake Service will be held at Saint Bede Monastery on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, the time of the Vigil Service. Funeral Services will be on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Saint Bede Monastery Chapel.\r\nShe is survived by many nieces, nephews, her religious community and many close friends.
