Stephen J. Alf, 78, of Eau Claire, died on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, surrounded by his family. Steve was born on August 21, 1938 in Eau Claire, a son to Alfred and Arlene (Cosgrove) Alf. He graduated from Regis High School in 1956. Steve married Esther Bauer on February 4, 1961 at the Holy Rosary Church in Lima, WI. He worked at Dolly Madison Dairy doing house to house milk deliver, National Presto Industries, and at Uniroyal. He joined the National Guard and in 1961, his Guard Unit was activated for the Berlin Crisis and they spent a year at Fort Lewis, Washington. His oldest son was born there. He enjoyed watching sports and Alaska shows on TV. Steve purchased a 1946 Willy's Jeep and in 1996, he and Esther joined the Clear Water 4-wheeler Club. They loved going on monthly trail rides and filming the rides, fishing at the cabin at Gordon, and especially the Chippewa River. Steve was a Volunteer Fireman for the Town of Union when he had his first heart attack in 1983. Steve is survived by his wife, Esther; children, Joseph (Kathy) Alf, Catherine (Daniel) Westphal, and Paul Alf; 4 grandchildren, Benjamin (Mara Radtke) Westphal, Melanie Westphal, Sarah Alf, and Lydia (boyfriend Brandon) Alf; brothers-in-law, Edwin (Donna) Bauer and Arnold (Marian) Bauer; sisters-in-law, Aileen Wayne and Sister Marian Bauer. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Hubert Bauer and Wilfred Bauer; and sisters-in-law, Rosina Brantner, Helen Sweeney, and Emma Bauer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2017, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St, Eau Claire, with Father John Schultz officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at the WEST CHAPEL location of Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave, with a Prayer Vigil beginning at 6:00 p.m., and again one hour prior to Mass on Friday at the church. Inurnment will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.
