Obituary

Stephen B. Schwahn died on March 19, 2013 in Minneapolis, MN. Steve was born May 27, 1933 and grew up in Eau Claire, WI. He always cherished his Wisconsin roots and loved his family home in Eau Claire and his vacation home near Rice Lake. He was educated at the Taft School in Connecticut and at Stanford University, where he graduated in Business in 1955. Returning to the Midwest after graduation, Steve worked in the investment business in St. Paul and Minneapolis. He was a serious student of investments, and became a knowledgeable and articulate advocate for several of the new stocks that entered the marketplace in the 1960's and 1970's. In later years, Steve concentrated his energies in the commodity markets, remaining active in that business even after his retirement in the 1990's. Throughout his years of education and in his profession, Steve made countless friends who have remained his friends for life. Steve loved good music, especially opera and classical. He also excelled in less-formal entertainment, performing in lively and irreverent skits and roasts honoring his friends' birthdays. He always enjoyed a good joke, even if it was on him. Steve considered these friends and their children and grandchildren like family, and was included in their family celebrations as well. His generosity and willingness to share his Long Lake cottage with family and friends including even their dogs created lifelong memories for at least 3 generations! Steve was a committed Christian, attending worship services regularly. He appreciated both the message of the services and the music. The religious denomination was not important to him. Family was always Steve's guiding light. He was proud of his heritage and appreciative of his close relationship with his brother Ingram and his family as well as his dear Helen and her extended family. Steve's unique combination of generosity, kind humor, easy and memorable laugh, intelligence, fervent independence, and deep loyalty will be missed by so many. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Benedict R. Schwahn and his mother, Fannie (Ingram) Schwahn, both of Eau Claire, WI. He is survived by his brother, Ingram B. Schwahn of Dallas, TX; his nieces, Mary Schwahn Horn and Sherrie Schwahn Gottsacker and their families including 5 great-nieces, 1 great-nephew, and 1 great-great-niece all of Dallas, TX. Donations may be made to Hazleden substance abuse centers. Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday April 3, at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 215 S 8th St Minneapolis, MN 55402. Reception following.
