Vernon W. Smith, age 78, of Eau Claire, died on September 24, 2012, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, WI. Vern was born to Norman and Juanita (Mueller) Smith, on March 24, 1934, in Chippewa Falls, WI. He graduated from Elk Mound High School in 1952. Vern married JoAnn Schumacher at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Eau Claire, on October 24, 1958. He began working at Uniroyal in 1952, until his retirement when they closed in 1992. Vern was an avid Packer and Badger fan. He volunteered much of his time driving for Feed My People and volunteered many hours at First Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Vern is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, JoAnn; siblings, Arlene Cartwright, Roger (Beth) Smith, Delores (Clayton) Traeger, Jim (Judy) Smith, Dale Smith, Janet (John) Kenyeri, and Norma (Dan) Fahrenkrug; sister-in-law, Grace Kreutzfeldt; brothers-in-law, Ronald (Kathy) Schumacher and Terry (Wink) Schumacher; along with many special nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by parents; and brother, Glen Smith. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at First Lutheran Church, 1005 Oxford Ave., Eau Claire, with Pastor Michael Rehak and Lowell Halvorson officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at church on Thursday. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire.
