Verna Witte, died on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Country Terrace in Altoona, where she has lived for the past 6 years. The Lord gave her 95 years, 8 months, and 19 days. Verna Witte was born on February 8, 1917, on a farm in Foster, Wisconsin. She was the second to the youngest of 7 children born to Gerhard and Caroline (Erdman) Miller. About 1930 when she was 13 years of age, the family had the flu which took the life of her brother and left her 8-9 weeks in the hospital. Symptoms included a lump of infection that settled in her arm. Doctor Midelfort performed one of his last surgeries on her scraping away the infection which saved her life, but left her somewhat handicapped in that arm. Because of a bad crop, Verna's parents were not able to send her to school beyond the 8th grade. Verna was united in marriage to Vernard Witte in l942 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Foster. To that union one daughter, Beatrice was born. Verna became a widow in 1964. She and her daughter, Beatrice spent many years working in the laundry and food service at Luther Hospital. They enjoy many trips traveling around the country. Verna was a faithful member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and was involved in the LWML, the ladies auxiliary, the senior citizens and senior fellowship. She also loved attending Bible studies. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernard; and her daughter, Beatrice in 2005. Those who mourn her death and yet rejoice in her heavenly inheritance include her sister, Elsie Strader; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be at 11:00a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012, at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave., with the Rev Fred C. Sauder officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
