Obituary

William "Bill" F. Metz, 80, of Altoona, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at his home with family by his side. Bill was born in St. Paul, MN, on November 21, 1932, to Frank and Wilhelmina (Gies) Metz. He graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in 1950. He then went on to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was married on November 22, 1956, to Teresa Bembnister. He worked for the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation as an Engineer Technician for 32 years, retiring in 1990. He was an active member of St. Mary's Parish for over 50 years. Bill was a dedicated member of the Altoona Lions Club for over 35 years, where he was the recipient of many awards, including Lion of the Year and the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was instrumental in organizing and participating in the vision screening program, Cinder City Days, the fish broil, and the Christmas display in the City Park. Bill is survived by his five daughters, Marty (Dennis) Brown, Beth (Brian) Kumbalek, Connie (Steve) Knezic, Janet (Larry) Roth, and Margaret (Lance) Johnson; significant other, Shirley Lindquist; grandchildren, Josh and Amanda Brown, Sarah and Alison Harder and Christopher Cahill, Teresa, Eva, Danilo, Marko and Laura Knezic, Mary and Kate Roth, Will and Cora Johnson; great-grandchildren, Noah Harder, and Lorelei, Alfredo, and London; brother, Jim (Mary) Metz; brothers-in-law, Dick (Teresa) Bembnister, and Rollie (Sue) Bembnister; sisters-in-law, Rita (Charlie) Clark and Mary Ann Metz; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa; parents; brother, Frank Metz; sister, Joan Bembnister; nephew, Frank Metz, Jr.; and parents-in-law, Frank and Cecelia Bembnister. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1812 Lynn Ave. in Altoona with Monsignor Edmund Klimek and Fr. Brian Konopa officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Rose Presentation by the Altoona Lions Club at 6:00 p.m. and a prayer vigil at 6:30, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave. in Eau Claire. Private Family Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Eau Claire. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Altoona WI Lions Club, P.O. Box 185 Altoona, WI 54720, or St. Mary's Church.
