Ansel Kennett Brooks, born July 11, 1949, died on July 4, 2023 after a long, frustrating struggle with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Ansel was born in Levittown, New York, but spent his formative years in a suburb of St. Louis. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1967. After high school graduation, he completed boot camp for the Navy Reserves at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He served on active duty in Vietnam for 2 years and returned stateside in 1971. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he met his first wife, Cindy Dvorak. During that time he became an avid bicyclist. After he was divorced in 1981, he rode his bicycle solo from Iowa to the West coast where he eventually settled In Eugene, Oregon. He took classes at Lane Community College to become a graphic designer and worked for various advertising agencies in Eugene.
He married Vicki Snider in 1997 and the couple moved to Eau Claire where he has resided ever since. He and Vicki both enjoyed bicycling and completed several bike tours together, including three bike tours in France. Until his recent illness, they rode hundreds of miles together on the town roads and bike trails around Eau Claire. Ansel worked as a graphic designer at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire until his retirement in 2014.
Ansel is survived by his wife, Vicki, of Eau Claire, and two sisters (Sydney and Rebecca Brooks) of Eugene Oregon. Ansel was liked by everyone who met him, hated by no one, and loved by many. He will be missed.
