Donald Duane Ranta, 85, long time resident of Poplar, WI died 4-18-2020. Don was born 6-10-1934 to Ellen Ranta, Step Father Arvid Ranta. In his early years Don served in the Navy, the Merchant Marines, married Joycelyn Neuhaus, worked for IBM in Omaha, NE and later spent many years working in the engine rooms for the PM shipping lines. He was well traveled due to the time he spent as a sailor. He was also a crew member of the failed rescue mission of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Don loved gatherings with family and friends, good food and good conversations. He was very loved and will be greatly missed. Don is survived by his children Taimi Ranta and David Ranta, former wife Joycelyn Higgins, grand children Steven Ranta, Casey Ranta, Ayla Ranta and great granddaughter Dahlia Ranta; all residing near the Superior area. A brother Gerald (Virginia) Ranta of Elk Mound, WI. Two sisters, Elmie (Norman) Henning of Eau Claire and Rosie (Arlo) Glas of North Dakota and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, one sister Edna Ranta and four brothers; Arnold, Ronald Tommie and Charles Ranta. A small private service will be held May 1st at the Lakeside Baptist Church and burial at Lakeside Cemetery. Pastor Travis Ulrich will officiate.
