John Gerseth Obituary

John Gerseth, 85, of Eau Claire, passed away at Dove Healthcare West on Sunday, August 21, 2016, with his family at his side. John was born on October 24, 1930 to John (Jack), Sr. and Irene (Miller) Gerseth in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated from Riverside High School in Milwaukee on June 22, 1950. John worked at his dad’s service station in Milwaukee before joining the Air Force on February 1, 1951 until October 31, 1952 before attending college at UW Madison. It is there that he met and married his beloved wife, Patricia Gorman on July 30, 1955 at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Madison, WI. He worked for ABS for a few years before getting his degree in electronics. John worked at UW Madison and UW Eau Claire for 25 years before retiring in 1996. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Altoona since 1979. After retiring, he volunteered at the food pantry and Our Lady of Fatima Blue Army as a bookkeeper. John joined St. James the Greater Catholic Church when he moved to west side. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Guadalupe Chapter, Altoona, and served one term as a Grand Knight. John cherished his wife Patricia of 61 years and dearly loved his family. He cherished his dog, Taffy. He loved fishing, biking and camping with his family. He also enjoyed gardening and traveling. John survived by his wife, Patricia of Eau Claire; two sons, David (Lavina) Gerseth of DeForest, WI and Robert (Barbie) Gerseth of Hortonville, WI; two daughters, Jean Gerseth of Eau Claire and Mary Gerseth of Eau Claire; two brothers, Ronald (Faye) Gerseth of La Porte, TX, and Eugene (Vicki) Gerseth of Phoenix, AZ; brother-in-law, John Gorman of Fond du Lac, WI; five grandchildren, Jamie (Matthew) DeRungs of Sun Prairie, WI, Christina (Jason) Mayr of DeForest, WI, Hannah, Morgan and Dereck Gerseth of Hortonville, WI; four great-grandchildren, Devan, Carter, and Layla Mayr of DeForest, WI, and Ryker DeRungs of Sun Prairie; as well as other nieces, nephews and other relatives. John was preceded in death by his parents; nephews, Billy Gerseth of Phoenix, AZ, and Michael Gorman of Madison, WI; nieces, Kathy Gorman-Pope and Barb Gorman; and sister-in-law, Mary Gorman, all of Fond du Lac, WI. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 814 Lynn Ave, Altoona, with Father Derek Sakowski officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the WEST CHAPEL location of Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave, Eau Claire, and again, one hour prior to Services at the church. Burial and Military Honors will be at Calvary Mausoleum, Eau Claire. We would like to thank St. Joseph’s Hospice for the kindness they have shown us at this difficult time. Plus, nurses and the staff of Dove Healthcare West for their tireless care. And in particular, the care by Dr. Sandager of the Marshfield Clinic, who went above and beyond in the care of John.
