Philip Kleist, age 85, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire, after suffering a stroke three weeks prior. He was born on March 27, 1933 in Eau Claire, a son of Herman and Violet (Hering) Kleist. Philip attended Eau Claire Schools. In 1960, he married Dori Lawler and together they had two sons. Phil worked at Uniroyal for several years, where he was an inspector in the lab. In his later years, he became a semi-truck driver and so enjoyed his cross-country trips. Phil was always a kind, caring and compassionate person who was never judgmental about anyone. He loved to talk history. There was nothing more important than family to Phil. He always expressed concern for those he cared about. Phil also had compassion for animals and cared about their welfare. Lastly, Phil had a great sense of humor and everyone who knew and met him has a “Phil” story to tell. Phil is survived by his two sons, Marcus and Vincent; two step-sons, Steven (Debbie) and Rick (Debbie) Lawler; grandchildren, Michelle and Cory; step-grandchildren, Robert and Kayla; five great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and his very special friend of twenty years, Shelly Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dori; parents; brother, Arthur Kleist, and sister Mable Pitsch. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. The family wishes to thank Dove Healthcare-West and Mayo Clinic Health System-Home Health & Hospice for their kind and caring compassion shown to Phil these last few weeks. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington.
